Everything You Need To Know About Wordle The Free Word Guessing Game That’s Trending Online

A new game is taking the internet by storm, and you may have already noticed it all over your Twitter feed.

The game, which was created in October 2021 and is completely free to use, has become the internet's latest obsession, attracting close to half a million users a day.

Going by the name of Wordle, the premise of the game is simple, users must guess a five-letter word by entering characters into empty boxes.

In order for players to see which letters they have guessed correctly and which letters they are yet to guess right, the game uses colour coded boxes.

The simplicity of Wordle is part of the reason why it's so addictive yet also utterly infuriating.

With only six guesses to get the word right and only one word provided per day, the pressure really is on for the game's players.

Who made Wordle?

Wordle was made by Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle for his world-game loving partner.

He then put the game online and, after tweaking the game to allow players to share results online, its popularity exploded.

"It’s not trying to do anything shady with your data or your eyeballs," he said, committing to never monetising the game.

"It’s just a game that’s fun."

Wardle told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that he is "a bit suspicious of mobile apps that demand your attention and send you push notifications to get more of your attention".

How to play Wordle

You can play Wordle here, as there is currently no smartphone app available to download.

Being housed on app stores would likely mean data would be collected from players, something Wardle is strongly opposed to.

The entirely web-browser based game is ad free and can be played on any internet enabled device.

When you open the web page there will be a grid with six lines of five tiles, each represent a letter.

To begin, a player must guess a random five-letter word in the first line. The game will then highlight the correct letters.

Letters highlighted green are correct and in the right place, letters highlighted in yellow mean that letter is in the word but in a different place. A grey highlight means the letter is not in the word at all.

Players then have five more attempts to guess the right word, travelling along the grid as they go.

How often can you play Wordle?

The creator has made it so the addictive game can only be played once a day.

Wardle told the New York Times that was deliberate and part of the appeal.

He said: “It’s something that encourages you to spend three minutes a day. And that’s it. Like, it doesn’t want any more of your time than that.”

The game is also free to all and Wardle doesn’t want to monetise it at all, and added: “It’s not trying to do anything shady with your data or your eyeballs. It’s just a game that’s fun.”
